American Center holds The Zoo Story show
20 July, 2013
The U.S. Consulate General Friday (July 19, 2013) at Lincoln Room of the American Center showcased Theatrecian Productions’ American play: Edward Albee’s masterpiece, “The Zoo” directed by Tathagata Chowdhury. The Zoo Story, originally titled Peter and Jerry, is a one-act play scripted by American PlaywrightEdward Albee that explores themes of loneliness, miscommunication, social disparity and dehumanization in the commercial world. Scripted by Albee in 1958, it is still relevant today, because it's a mirror of any society where isolation, class distinction, economic disparity and hurdles in communication exist. This Theatrecian Productions venture is perhaps the longest running play in Kolkata’s history of theater in the English language. Deborshi Barat performs as the rebel Jerry, who is visibly tormented with a society that is fragmented and categorized as "upper class, middle class and upper lower middle class", as he urges Tathagata Chowdhury who acts the part of the docile Peter to fight for his manhood and realize there are things more valuable than the "park bench" on which Peter is comfortably perched every Sunday afternoon in good weather. The audience can relate with both Peter and Jerry because they are the two extremes of any society where communication breakdowns occur. This is perhaps the reason why the production has enjoyed more than 70 shows since 2003.
